While researching the data needed to support the seemingly evident need of assistance in the area of diabetic care it was discovered that several national sources have studied and documented their findings. As of November 1983 the Federal government officialy designated the month of November as National Diabetes Awareness Month.Although the federal government recognized the need for awareness more than 27 years ago it is up to local representation to provide the actualized effort.
Did you know that the national research survey reports that by the year 2012 over 75% of Americans will have this debilitating disease. In order to obtain a sampling locally 100 people were randomly surveyed. The question posed was"Do you or do you know anyone that has diabetes?"Over 82% said that they knew someone who has the disease and over 18% said that a loved one has passed away from the disease
The Parkland/Spanaway area of Pierce County will be our primary target, but ideally we will be servicing all of the area. The Parkland/Spanaway communities have a median population of 53,426 and of that number 56.55% have an annual income under 50,000 per year. This population information was provided by ESRI GIS and mapping software. The three counties that rated higher in percentage of population having diabetes than the states percentage, was Grant,Asotin and Pierce county
